Quintessence

Project Overview
In 2017, our team created Quintessence, an interactive LED light sculpture for the first edition of Lumières Hong Kong—a large-scale light festival introduced from the renowned Fête des Lumières in Lyon, France.

Inspired by the celestial figure Metatron, the work symbolises knowledge, growth, and spiritual ascension. It explores the concept of sculpture as a living, responsive form, engaging audiences through both physical and digital interaction. White LED light represents the supreme brilliance of cosmic alchemy, creating a pure, symbolic, and immersive visual experience that invites reflection and unity.


Role & Contributions

Digitalization of the Sculpture – Converted the sculpture into an industry-standard digital format to ensure compatibility with industrial production.

3D Modeling – Reconstructed the prototype into a standardized model for further refinement and development.

LED Integration – Integrated custom-programmable LED strips, visualized the data in a 3D space, and mapped out LED placement and programming to achieve seamless synchronization with the sculpture’s structure.

System Design & Setup – Designed system diagrams and configured the setup to ensure precise alignment between lighting effects and the sculpture’s form and intended visual impact.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration – Worked closely with programmers to develop the interactive interface and coordinated with Industrial Designer to ensure smooth installation of the sculpture, lighting, audio, and overall system, meeting both technical and safety standards.


This project further strengthened expertise in 3D modeling, digital fabrication, and interactive lighting technology while providing valuable experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration. The result was a seamless integration of art and technology, delivering an immersive and engaging visual experience for the audience.
